UN Reaffirms Commitment to Lebanon Stability as Peacekeepers' Mandate Ends
On October 14, 2026, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix reaffirmed the UN's commitment to Lebanon's stability as the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) nears expiration on December 31, 2026. UNIFIL, with about 7,500 personnel from nearly 50 countries, has acted as a buffer between Israel and Lebanon since 1978, despite several conflicts. The Security Council voted last year to end the mandate under U.S. pressure.
