PoliticsUK Bans Protestant March in Northern Ireland Catholic District
The UK Northern Ireland Secretary banned a Protestant parade through the mainly Catholic Garvaghy Road in Portadown after a two-week standoff. The Parades Commission had authorized 35 Orangemen to march silently on September 27, but thousands blocked the procession. Orangemen remain at Drumcree Church demanding to complete the march. Minister Chris Bryant called for protests to end, citing public safety and changed circumstances.
