WorldUjjain's Rich History from Mauryan Capital to Aurangzeb's Era
Ujjain, known for its ancient heritage, was a capital of the Mauryan empire and the Malwa sultanate. It inspired classical works like Kalidasa's Meghdoot. Archaeologist V. S. Wakankar found evidence of human settlement 4,000 years ago, including Chalcolithic artifacts and Northern Black Polished Ware. By the 6th century BCE, Ujjain was the capital of Avanti, one of 16 Mahajanapadas. Emperor Ashoka governed Ujjain before embracing Buddhism and building a stupa and monastery complex.
