Tuvalu's Falepili Treaty Offers Dignified Climate Migration Pathway
At the Pacific Pre-COP31 event in Tuvalu, climate migration was highlighted as an urgent policy issue. Tuvalu, facing rising sea levels, has implemented the Falepili Union Treaty with Australia since 2024, allowing up to 280 Tuvaluans yearly to gain permanent residence via lottery without job offers. This program supports housing, education, and healthcare, providing a dignified migration option before disasters strike. Meanwhile, climate migrants from drought-hit Bundelkhand face harsh conditions in New Delhi without treaty protections, a gap COP31 may overlook.
