The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended that apps streaming free, ad-supported TV channels on smart TVs require a government licence similar to cable and DTH operators. TRAI sent these recommendations to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, proposing a 20-year national authorisation with a ₹1 lakh entry fee. Channels exclusive to such apps must register and pay ₹1 lakh annually.
