ScienceTiny Fire Ants Spread in Hawaii Since 1990s Threatening Wildlife
Tiny fire ants, just 1.5 mm long, arrived in Hawaii in the 1990s via nursery plants and have since formed supercolonies threatening native animals. First recorded officially in 1999, they spread rapidly across the Big Island and Kauai. Studies suggest the ants may have been present since around 1993, making them the most recent invasive ant species challenging Hawaii's ecosystem.
