Thomas Gilcrease's 160 Acres Yielded 32 Oil Wells by 1917
In 1899, nine-year-old Thomas Gilcrease was allotted 160 acres in Oklahoma. By 1917, after oil was found nearby, his land had 32 producing oil wells. The wealth generated supported his passion for collecting and helped preserve American Indian history, art, and culture at the museum he founded in Tulsa.
