Aoudad sheep, native to northern Africa and listed as vulnerable, were introduced into the wild in Palo Duro Canyon, Texas, in 1957. Since then, they have spread across Texas and now compete with native bighorn sheep for food and habitat. While fewer than 10,000 aoudad remain in their native range, they have become common in Texas, creating an unusual conservation dynamic.
