Ted Turner Transforms Montana Ranch into Bison Habitat
In 1989, CNN founder Ted Turner purchased the 113,613-acre Flying D Ranch in southwest Montana, replacing cattle with bison to restore the native ecosystem. The ranch now supports bison, wolves, and bears. Turner's efforts address the decline of bison, which occupy less than 1% of their historic range despite once numbering over 500,000 in North America. State laws required fencing, but the project helped revive wildlife on private land.
