Tagore Family Pioneered Coal Commercialization in India

The Tagore family was the first to commercialize coal mining in India nearly two centuries ago. In 1835, Dwarkanath Tagore started coal extraction through Carr, Tagore and Company in Raniganj, West Bengal. In 1843, it merged with Gilmore, Homfray and Company to form Bengal Coal Company Limited, India's first joint-stock coal enterprise, marking the start of coal business in India.
