On November 5, 1872, Susan B. Anthony illegally voted in a U.S. election, defying laws that barred women from voting. She was arrested, tried, and fined $100. Though she died in 1906 before women gained voting rights, her activism inspired the 19th Amendment in 1920, which prohibited voter discrimination based on sex. Born in Massachusetts, she was also active in the anti-slavery movement.
