Supreme Court upholds states' power to levy additional sales tax

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a 1974 Constitution Bench ruling that states can impose additional sales tax or surcharge as a percentage of existing sales tax. A seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant ruled that a reference on this issue is now academic, as the challenged provisions have been replaced or amended and GST law is in force. The court declined fresh adjudication but reaffirmed the earlier decision's validity.
