Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC on Religious Conversion and Reservation
The Supreme Court upheld the Madras High Court's ruling that religious conversion from Hinduism to another religion does not qualify a person for SC or OBC reservation. The case involved Tamil Nadu's 3.5% quota for Muslim OBCs. In March 2024, the DMK government allowed converted OBCs, SCs, and Denotified Communities to claim the quota, but the Madras HC struck down this order in June 2024. The Supreme Court rejected the TVK government's appeal.
