Supreme Court Upholds Cultural Rights, Allows Calcutta HC to Hear Nicobar Project Case
The Supreme Court declared preservation of culture a fundamental right and refused to stay proceedings in the Calcutta High Court regarding the Great Nicobar project. It dismissed the Centre's plea challenging the maintainability of PILs filed against the project. The Calcutta High Court is now permitted to decide on the petitions concerning environmental and cultural concerns related to the project.
