The Supreme Court ruled that the 24-hour period to present a detainee before a magistrate starts from the moment their personal liberty is actually restricted, not from the formal arrest time. Police cannot extend this period by detaining someone first and then showing a later arrest time. If the detainee is not produced within 24 hours, excluding travel time to the magistrate, they must be released immediately, as per Article 22(2) of the Constitution.
