Supreme Court Seeks Response on MDR for UPI Payments Above ₹2,000

The Supreme Court has asked the central government, RBI, and others to respond within four weeks to a public interest petition challenging the imposition of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI person-to-merchant transactions exceeding ₹2,000. The court refused to grant an interim stay on the MDR rule. The government stated that 96% of UPI users will not be affected, as MDR applies only to eligible P2M transactions above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300 per transaction.
