The Supreme Court clarified that Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act does not provide blanket protection to public servants for demanding bribes. Prior approval is required only for offences related to official decisions or recommendations. The court ruled that demanding a bribe is a pure criminal act unrelated to official duties, dismissing an appeal by Rajasthan police constable Tejaram against charges framed under the PC Act and IPC.
