PoliticsSupreme Court Rules Death Penalty Only If Reformation Impossible
The Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty can be imposed only when a convict's reformation is completely ruled out. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and Vijay Bishnoi stated that life imprisonment must be proven inadequate before capital punishment is considered. The court emphasized distinguishing the crime's severity from the convict's potential for reform. Applying this, it commuted the death sentence of a man convicted of sexually assaulting his six-year-old stepdaughter.
