PoliticsSupreme Court reviews State DGP appointment rules against 2006 Prakash Singh verdict
On October 8, 2026, the Supreme Court asked senior advocate Raju Ramachandran to examine whether State rules for appointing Directors General of Police (DGPs) violate the 2006 Prakash Singh judgment. The 2006 ruling mandated transparent appointments and a minimum two-year tenure. A 2019 order added that only officers with at least six months before retirement should be eligible. The Centre challenged Jharkhand's DGP appointment under these guidelines.
