Supreme Court expands wetlands demarcation to all water bodies

The Supreme Court has broadened the mandate for identifying and demarcating wetlands to include all water bodies nationwide, emphasizing their importance as sources of drinking water. A bench led by Justices Aravind Kumar and Vipul M Pancholi ordered states and UTs to complete ground truthing and physical demarcation of wetlands identified in the 2021 SAC Atlas within three months, under the Wetlands Rules, 2017.
