TechnologySupernumerary Seats Scheme Boosts Women Enrollment at IITs
Between 2013 and 2020, women made up only 7% to 9% of BTech students at IITs, despite being 28% to 29% of engineering undergraduates nationwide. The 2018 Supernumerary Seats Scheme introduced additional female-only seats at IITs where women’s representation was below 20%, raising their share to nearly 20% by 2020. The scheme also increased SC/ST women’s enrollment without reducing seats for men.
