Sugar prices have increased by more than Rs 4 per kg in the last month in both retail and wholesale markets, with retail prices reaching Rs 59.50 per kg. Year-on-year, prices are up Rs 12-13 per kg due to lower 2025-26 production, festive demand, crop damage, global supply issues, and hoarding. The government has imposed stock limits, increased imports, and started crushing earlier to ease supply. Kolkata recorded the highest retail price at Rs 65 per kg.
