SciencePhoto: FirstpostStudy Reveals Limitations of Early Warning Systems in Himalayan Floods
A recent study analyzed the August 26, 2026, Langtang massif collapse in Nepal, which caused a destructive flood along the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli-Narayani corridor. Using data from six monitoring stations, researchers found the first public alert was issued 38.8 minutes after the collapse, but the flood reached the highest station in 12.8 minutes, arriving at inhabited areas before warnings. The study highlights challenges in timely early warnings in the Himalayas.
