A new study has identified potential foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) risk zones in Jammu and Kashmir where livestock migration routes overlap with habitats of endangered wildlife like the hangul and markhor. Recent FMD outbreaks were reported in 2021 and suspected in 2024 in districts including Kargil, Bandipora, Pulwama, Budgam, and Srinagar. The findings aim to help veterinarians and policymakers manage disease transmission and support One Health goals.
