SciencePhoto: Deccan HeraldStudy Finds Konkani Maternal Roots Mostly Local, Saraswat Groups Show West Eurasian Links
A study by Hyderabad's Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology and Mangalore University analyzed mitochondrial DNA of 295 Konkani speakers. It found that while most Konkani maternal ancestry is local, Saraswat groups have higher affinities with West Eurasian and Steppe lineages. This suggests Bronze Age migrations into South Asia involved both males and females, challenging the idea of exclusively male-driven migration.
