Study Finds Europe as Likely Origin of Bats
A study analyzing genomes of 103 bat species and 44 fossil bats suggests that bats likely originated in Europe during the late Paleocene. This research, conducted by the Bat1K consortium, revises previous theories that proposed Africa, Asia, or North America as the birthplace of bats. The study offers new insights into the evolutionary history and geographic spread of bats, the only mammals capable of powered flight.
