ScienceSpain's Louisiana Red Swamp Crayfish Invasion Persists After 50 Years
The Louisiana red swamp crayfish was introduced to Spain in the 1970s, first in Badajoz's Guadiana basin in 1973 and then in Seville's Guadalquivir rice fields in 1974. Over 50 years later, this invasive species remains widespread and difficult to eradicate across Europe. A 2020 study revealed at least one additional introduction route linked to Kenya, complicating its spread further.
