ScienceSouthwest Monsoon Ends with 12.6% Rainfall Deficit in India
India's southwest monsoon ended with 759.4 mm of rainfall, 12.6% below normal, marking the fourth-lowest since 2001, according to the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon started weak, with a 51.1% deficit in mid-July, briefly improved in late July and early August, then declined again from mid-August. Regional deficits varied, with northeast India down 25%, south peninsular 24%, northwest 6%, and central India near normal with 2% deficit.
