India's market regulator SEBI has proposed removing the long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax on foreign investors to attract more overseas funds and boost domestic equities. The recommendation is part of pre-Budget proposals ahead of the 2027 Union Budget but is not binding on the government. SEBI also suggested LTCG tax relief for domestic mutual fund investors switching schemes after holding units for over a year. This comes amid a $31 billion foreign investor sell-off and underperformance of Indian equities compared to other emerging markets.
