Scientists Use Underwater Umbrellas to Protect Florida Corals from Heat
In a 2024 experiment in the Florida Keys, scientists placed custom-built underwater shade structures over colonies of two brain coral species. This was done to protect the corals as ocean temperatures rose to exceptionally high levels, aiming to reduce heat stress and improve coral survival during extreme heat events.
