SC Upholds Denial of OBC Benefits to Hindu Converts to Islam
The Supreme Court upheld the Madras High Court ruling that individuals converting from Hinduism to Islam cannot claim reservation benefits under the Backward Class category. Justices PK Mishra and Shree Chandrashekhar stated that moving from a Hindu to a non-Hindu social order disqualifies one from such benefits. The Tamil Nadu government had challenged the high court's quashing of its recognition of seven Muslim sects as Backward Classes.
