Saltcedar, also known as tamarisk, was introduced in the early 1900s across the American West for shade, windbreaks, fuel, and ornamental use. Initially planted on about 10,000 acres in 1920, it rapidly expanded to over 1.2 million acres by the mid-1960s, covering floodplains and surpassing the size of Rhode Island. Three tamarisk species had arrived before 1920.
