15 Guanacos Introduced to Falklands Island in 1930s Survived Genetic Crashes
In the late 1930s, fifteen guanacos from southern Patagonia were brought to Staats Island in the Falklands. These native South American camelids founded the entire herd on this remote, treeless island. Despite two genetic population crashes, their genes have persisted, maintaining the population's lineage.
