Sage Matanga's Brihaddesi, written between the 6th and 8th centuries CE, was the first text to define the Indian raga as 'that which colours the mind.' This Sanskrit work laid the theoretical foundation for Indian musicology, acknowledging diverse musical forms and languages, including Kannada. Matanga introduced the sarigama notation system and distinguished structured and free music, influencing later musicians like Purandaradasa who systematised music education.
