SciencePhoto: HT WorldRNA from Antarctica’s Blood Falls Reveals Ancient Marine Microbes
Researchers studying Blood Falls in Antarctica’s Taylor Glacier discovered RNA evidence of a marine microbial community living in the brine beneath the glacier. This community appears to have survived long after being isolated from the ocean. The red, iron-rich brine flows into Lake Bonney and likely originated from ancient seawater trapped during warmer periods before the glacier advanced, according to a 2026 Nature Geoscience study.
