RBI Raises Repo Rate to 5.5%, Rules Out Near-Term Cuts
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) increased the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5% during its Monetary Policy Committee meeting. Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that rate cuts are unlikely in the near term as the RBI adopts a 'calibrated tightening' stance. Following the hike, the rupee fell 22 paise to 96.57 against the U.S. dollar, and several auto stocks including Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki dropped up to 3%.
