Private Banks’ Profits Rise Despite Margin Pressure on Top Lenders
Private sector banks reported higher profits in the September quarter despite margin pressure on the top three lenders—HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank. FCNR(B) deposits boosted deposit growth to a decade high, but deposit costs rose due to higher rates for NRIs. Axis Bank’s NIM fell 37 basis points to 3.36%, ICICI’s by 12 points to 4.18%, and HDFC’s by 11 points to 3.16%. Profits rose significantly for all, with YES Bank’s net profit up 65% to Rs 1,080 crore.
