Primary School Teachers Demand Voting Rights in Legislative Council Elections

Teacher organisations have renewed their campaign to include over 2.5 million primary and upper primary teachers in the electoral rolls for state legislative council elections. Currently, voting rights in teachers’ constituencies of six states with legislative councils are limited to secondary and higher education teachers under Article 171 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1950. This exclusion affects Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
