Prickly acacia, introduced to Australia in the 1890s for shade and fodder, has become a major weed problem. Native to Africa and parts of Asia, it now infests more than 6.6 million hectares. The Northern Territory Government lists it as a Weed of National Significance. Spread is aided by cattle carrying seeds on their hair, hooves, and through digestion. It was declared noxious in 1957 after spreading widely in Queensland.
