Polio Persists in Pakistan and Afghanistan Amid Global Eradication Efforts
On World Polio Day, Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the last countries struggling to eliminate polio. In 2026, Afghanistan reported 42 wild poliovirus type 1 cases, double the 21 cases in 2025. Pakistan reported six cases, down from 31 last year. Together, they reported 48 cases in 2026 so far, compared to 52 in 2025. Environmental samples show ongoing virus circulation despite fewer paralysis cases, highlighting fragile progress and the need for strong political commitment.
