SciencePhoto: HT WorldPhoenix's 2020 Reflective Roads Cooled Pavements but Increased Pedestrian Heat
In 2020, Phoenix implemented the Cool Pavement Pilot Program, coating roads in eight neighborhoods with reflective sealant to reduce asphalt heat. While pavement temperatures dropped by up to 12°F, the reflective surfaces increased midday radiant heat exposure for pedestrians. The city partnered with Arizona State University to study this trade-off, aiming to combat extreme urban heat safely.
