Pennsylvania's Abandoned Coal Mines May Hold 220 Billion Gallons of Water
A U.S. Geological Survey study found that Pennsylvania's abandoned underground coal mines in the Western Middle Anthracite Coalfield may contain between 60 to 220 billion gallons of water. The study covered a 120-square-mile area across Schuylkill, Columbia, and Northumberland counties. These flooded mine workings form a complex underground water system, with interconnected mine pools allowing groundwater movement and interaction with nearby streams.
