Pennsylvania Fruit Flies Show Rapid Genetic Evolution from Summer to Autumn
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania studied 10 fruit fly populations in outdoor enclosures over four months in 2014. They documented rapid genetic changes as the seasons shifted from summer to autumn. Natural selection affected genetic variant frequencies at over 60% of genome sites, and several physical traits changed in response to environmental conditions.
