SciencePhoto: HT WorldOrcas Island Dam Removal Opens Stream for Salmon
On Orcas Island, Washington, a small dam blocking fish passage on West Beach Creek was removed in 2014 by the Northwest Straits Foundation, led by Puget Sound Partnership. Replacing the dam with a larger culvert opened 1,584 feet of stream, allowing salmon to reach upstream habitats within a year. The previous dam and two small pipes had obstructed fish and limited creek flow, causing sediment buildup.
