ScienceOrange Waste Transformed Costa Rican Pasture into Thriving Forest
In 1998, 12,000 metric tons of orange peels and pulp were dumped on a degraded cattle pasture in northwest Costa Rica's Área de Conservación Guanacaste. Over 16 years, this waste helped triple tree diversity and increase woody biomass by 176%, turning the barren land into a regenerating forest. The initiative was a collaboration between juice company Del Oro and park scientists to restore the damaged ecosystem.
