SciencePhoto: HT WorldOntario Farmer Uses Cotton Briefs to Measure Soil Activity
Ontario farmer Blake Vince conducted an unconventional soil-health experiment by burying white cotton briefs for two months to gauge biological activity in soil. The "Soil Your Undies" campaign showed that in biologically active soil, microorganisms break down cotton faster. In southwestern Ontario, no-till fields with cover crops lost about 47% of fabric, compared to 2% in conventionally tilled fields, indicating healthier soil.
