ScienceOnondaga Lake Reopened to Fishing in 1986 After Pollution Cleanup
Onondaga Lake in Central New York was once so polluted that swimming was banned in 1940 and fishing in 1970. Fishing resumed in 1986 with consumption advisories. Today, the lake hosts over 65 documented fish species. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reports the lake is the cleanest in over 100 years, with reduced pollution, improved clarity, and increased biodiversity, exceeding recovery expectations.
