ScienceObsolete Battle Tanks Sunk Off Alabama in 1994 Now Serve as Fish Habitat
In 1994, 100 obsolete battle tanks were deliberately sunk off the coast of Alabama to create artificial reefs and enhance fish habitats. The tanks were sunk in three batches—six on June 1, 58 in late July, and 36 on September 26. This initiative, called REEF-EX, was a collaboration between federal and state agencies to improve fish populations by adding structure to the otherwise flat sandy sea floor.
