The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) informed the Supreme Court that merchants cannot pass on Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges to customers under the revised UPI pricing framework. NPCI stated that UPI app providers cannot impose platform fees on users and that violating this rule may lead to compliance actions, including termination of UPI membership for banks and payment providers. This follows a petition challenging MDR on P2M UPI transactions above Rs 2,000.
