ScienceNortheast India Breaks 125-Year Rainfall Record Amid Severe Drought
India experienced its fourth weakest southwest monsoon since 2001, with 759.4 mm rainfall against the normal 868.6 mm, about 87.4% of the long-term average. The northeast recorded the lowest rainfall in 125 years, causing drought-like conditions in 316 districts. The uneven distribution saw central and northwest India receive near-normal rain, while the south peninsula and northeast faced severe water shortages. A strong El Niño effect is expected to persist until March 2027.
